NHS Eye Examinations

At Ochil Eyes, we believe the eye examination is about more than just making sure you have the right prescription. We believe its the single most important part of your journey with us.

Our test room features the most up to date equipment required to carry out thorough eye examinations including a fundus camera that allows us to take photos of the back of your eye.

Eye examinations in Scotland are free, funded by the NHS and the Scottish Government. The frequency with which you can have a free eye test depends on your age, and certain medical conditions:

  1. Patients aged under 16 or over 60 are eligible once a year.
  2.
  3. Patients aged between 16 and 59 years are eligible once every two years.
  4.
  5. Patients with diabetes are eligible once a year.
  6.
  7. Patients who are sight impaired or severely sight impaired are eligible once a year.

Emergency Eyecare

Community optometrists are already the first contact point for any eye problems and can diagnose and treat a number of conditions without the patient requiring an appointment with their GP or an ophthalmologist. If you call your GP with a problem with your eye, they will usually request that you speak to your optician first.

Free NHS funded eye examinations are also provided for:

Emergency eye issues, for example a red or sticky eye, blurred or reduced vision, flashers and floaters or pain in or around the eye.

Ongoing review of conditions such as cataract, suspected glaucoma and ocular hypertension

We do not provide a walk in emergency eyecare service. You must phone the practice on 01259 752755 in the first instance and tell us about the problem you are experiencing with your eyes. We will then decide how quickly we need to see you based on what you tell us.

If you have an optician that you usually attend for your routine eye examinations, or have attended in the past for one, you will be asked to contact that practice first.  When you require urgent or emergency eyecare, it is important that you attend the same practice you usually attend, unless they are not available and the problem cannot wait.

Home Visits

If you or a someone you know finds it difficult to leave home unaided, you could be entitled to an NHS funded eye examination in the comfort of your own home.

Our optometrist Richard and a member of the practice team will come out to your home at a pre-arranged time and will call you the day before to make sure it is still convenient. Richard will ask you about your eye history and about any problems you may be having.

He will then conduct an eye examination using equipment adapted for use on home visits. After your eye examination, he will discuss your eye health with you and any prescription requirements you may have. He can advise on the best kind of glasses for your needs and will then hand you over to Sam or Susy to discuss frame and lens options.

Being an independent practice allows us to offer a personalised and consistent service to our patients both in our practice and in your home. It will always be the same small team who come to visit you and who will answer any queries you may have via telephone.

We will always be honest and give you the best advice for your needs. We allocate at least one hour for every home visit we do so we will not rush you and will take our time to ensure we get it right.

Areas covered:

Tillicoultry, Coalsnaughton, Fishcross, Alva, Menstrie, Dollar, Muckhart, Tullibody, Sauchie and Alloa.

If we do not cover your area, or we cannot offer you a suitable appointment, we can provide you with the contact details of another home eyecare provider.

We do not offer an emergency eyecare service within your home. If you have an urgent problem which requires immediate attention, we will ask another home eyecare provider to contact you to arrange this.

Contact Lenses

A lot of people believe that they cannot wear contact lenses because their prescription is too high or because they need multifocals.

Some of our patients even believe they are too old to try contact lenses for the first time. We say you are never too old to try something for the first time.

While for some, contact lenses are not a viable option, we have fitted dozens of patients with contact lenses who previously believed they could not wear them.

The feedback from many is that the experience has been life changing
